WMFHA is excited to share that Alex Gurdian,CAMT, Regional Maintenance Supervisor with Thrive Communities, was part of a select group chosen by the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) to attend an in-depth Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT) job task analysis in Washington DC.
From NAAEI: This thorough examination allowed us to identify key responsibilities and highlight areas for skill development. A big thank you to all the maintenance professionals who participated and shared their valuable insights. Together, we're making strides toward a more efficient and effective maintenance training program!
The information gathered from this group over 2 days will drive the content revisions as the curriculum is being rewritten. The goal is to release the new CAMT program in 2026.
We know that Alex represented his company and WMFHA well at the meetings. He shared some of his experience with us below
What did you enjoy the most about working on the new CAMT program?
I thoroughly enjoyed working on the development phase of the new CAMT program we created, as it simplifies and enhances the learning experience. It’s designed specifically for technicians with about a year of experience in our industry, making the content both relevant and practical for those looking to sharpen their skills. It's exciting to see how the program will help technicians grow and build upon their existing foundation.
What areas were the most rewarding to work on?
Curriculum Development: Crafting a comprehensive curriculum that balances technical skills with essential soft skills, ensuring technicians are well-prepared for real-world challenges. Accreditation: Securing accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which enhances the program's credibility and aligns it with industry standards. Practical Application: Designing hands-on training modules that allow technicians to apply their knowledge in realistic scenarios, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Industry Impact: Contributing to the professional growth of technicians with approximately one year of experience, thereby elevating the overall quality of maintenance services in the industry.
Did you make connections with other maintenance professionals across the country?
Yes, I met with maintenance regionals, directors, and area managers from Florida, Texas, California, and North Carolina, representing Greystar, MAAC, Thompson Thrift, and others
Will you continue to help with the updates to CAMT?
Yes, I will continue throughout the year with virtual meetings and content review.
What advice would you give to a WMFHA maintenance team member that is considering getting their CAMT?
I highly recommend enrolling in the CAMT certification program. It enhances your skills, making you more efficient and confident in troubleshooting and repairs. It also adds credibility to your resume, opening doors to better job opportunities and higher pay. Many property management companies prefer or even require CAMT certification for promotions.
Earning your CAMT is an investment in your future—it demonstrates your commitment to professionalism and growth in the maintenance industry. If you're serious about advancing your career, go for it!
