Tacoma Passes Rental Housing Code
Date postedNovember 26, 2018
After seven months of negotiations, the Tacoma City Council passed a Rental Housing Code on the evening of 11/20/18. The majority of the new laws become effective February 1, 2019, however, the Council passed an amendment speeding up the effective date of notice of rent increases.
Beginning December 1, all rent increase notices must be delivered 60 days prior to the effective date of the rent increase.
Because the law does not take effect until December 1, all renewal notices (with a rent increase) intended to be effective January 1, 2019, can be delivered with 30 days notice if they are delivered prior to December 1.
All renewal notices (with a rent increase) intended to be effective February 1, 2019, must be delivered 60 days prior to their effective date (by Monday, December 3) in order to be legal and effective.
Because of the urgency of this specific provision, I am alerting you to this specific provision. After the Thanksgiving holiday, I'll provide more information about the remainder of the ordinance.
If you have any questions about this new ordinance, please don't hesitate to contact me by email or by telephone at (425) 656-9077.
