Help Stop Rent Control!

The legislature convenes Monday and two bad bills are already scheduled for hearings next week. We encourage you to learn more about these bills and testify virtually or in-person.

At a minimum, we ask that you sign in OPPOSED to both bills ASAP. Instructions to sign in OPPOSED or to TESTIFY are available below.

If you will be testifying (and have signed up below) or would like to attend the hearing in person in Olympia, please contact Carter Nelson at carter@wmfha.org by 5pm on Tuesday, Jan 9.

Two Chances to Make a Difference

What will these bills do?

  • 5% Rent cap

  • Late fee cap $10/month

  • Move-in fees cap

    • Fees and security deposit combined may not exceed 1 month’s rent

  • 180-Day rent increase notice requirement

  • 20-day lease termination (over 3% increase)

    • Resident responsible for only pro rata payment

  • Ban on lower priced fixed term lease v. month to month

  • Extends consumer protection to RLTA

    • AG office oversight and enforcement for certain provisions

  • Penalties for violations

    • Mandatory damages of three months’ rent and attorney fees/cost

    • Defense to eviction

  • Does not apply to new properties

    • Exemption for 10 years from certificate of occupancy

  • Declared emergency

    • Goes into effect immediately upon signing into law
