Spokane Proposes Changes to Rental Registry

Posted By: Carter Nelson Advocacy News, Articles,

Spokane City Council is considering amending the rental registry ordinance to do a few things to force compliance.  This proposal will make waiver of the $15 registration fee more streamlined, exempting housing authorities and various subsidized programs (such as HCV and VA vouchers).

The changes to the ordinance would also prohibit landlords from the following actions if they are not on the rental registry or don’t have a business license:

1.           Raising rent or monthly obligations;

2.           Getting a final judgment/writ evicting a tenant.

This item was originally set for September 16, but was deferred to first reading on October 7. We will update as this process moves forward.

To our knowledge, our members are complying with the registry. If you have had any issues getting registered, or have any experiences you want to share, please reach out to us.
