In a heartwarming display of community spirit and generosity, the Washington Multi-Family Housing Association (WMFHA) teamed up with Rebuilding Together to transform the lives of two elderly women in South Seattle. Ruth Garrett and Renee Morgan have lived in their homes for decades, but found themselves in challenging circumstances as their homes fell into disrepair and without the means to fix it on their own. With more than 80 volunteers rallying together, their homes were revitalized, restoring not only the physical structures but also a sense of dignity and comfort.
The scope of the work was impressive. Volunteers replaced old and broken appliances, built a new shed, mended fences, and inspected the roofs to ensure they were safe and secure. The overgrown trees were trimmed back, landscaping was cleaned up, and trash was removed, leaving the yards looking neat and welcoming. Inside the homes, volunteers organized belongings and laid new flooring, making the spaces both functional and beautiful. These efforts were more than just home improvements; they were a lifeline for two women who had been struggling to maintain their homes under the weight of financial hardship.
This annual event has grown larger and more impactful with each passing year, drawing in more volunteers, resources, and enthusiasm. The momentum continues to build as more people and companies recognize the profound difference, they can make in the lives of those in need. We’re already looking forward to next year’s project, excited to see how our community can come together once again to bring hope and help to more deserving residents.
This incredible project would not have been possible without the support of numerous companies and individuals. Over $51,000 of products, services and time was donated, providing the necessary funds for materials, supplies, and professional services. Volunteers not only contributed their time and skills but also their enthusiasm, bringing energy and compassion to the task at hand. The transformation of these homes was a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with a common goal.
Special recognition is due to Terry Spivey of Thrive and James Ohrn of Avenue5. These dedicated individuals gave dozens of hours of their time, inspecting the homes, coordinating the volunteers, and ensuring that every detail was attended to. Their leadership and commitment were instrumental in bringing this project to life, and their efforts have left a lasting impact on both the volunteers and the homeowners.
As the project ends, we want to thank all the volunteers who gave their time and energy, the companies who donated money and supplies, and everyone who played a role in making this transformation possible. The success of this project is a shining example of the power of the multifamily community, proving that together, we can make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
